So…You Think You Want a Portuguese Water Dog!
PWD puppies range from $2500-$3500. PWD’s are a challenging breed. They do protect their house and property…protection was a major job for the dog back in the day when they protected the fishing boats at night. PWD’s will jump on you, bark at incoming friends and protect the yard from other dogs and people. If friends are coming over on a regular basis this can become an issue for you. If you don’t have a fenced in yard, then a PWD won’t work for you. Also, PWD’s need someone to be home…they are not a breed to be left at home while the parents are working and the kids are at school. You will come home to a wild animal if the dog is left in a crate all day…if left loose, your home will be destroyed when you get home. Finally, PWD’s are a mouthy breed…they can nip and even bite in their excitement. I have at least 20 shirts with dog bite holes in them. The most recent hole arrived last week, and my dog is 8 years old.
We think PWDs are the best breed ever. But they are not suited to everyone.

If you are looking for a lower energy dog, then the PWD is not for you. These dogs need a job, which can be agility, obedience, rally, water work, or a variety of other activities. If you don't give them a job, they will make up a job, and the never ends well.
